Student designers invited to join Zamora on the GLAM! runway, vie to earn $1,500 in scholarships
Goodwill Hawaii is pleased to announce that Kini Zamora, 2016 “Project Runway” All-Star contestant, will return to produce the fashion show on the opening night of the nonprofit’s annual event, Goodwill Goes GLAM! presented by Bank of Hawaii Foundation at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall from July 21-24, 2016. The theme for the 2016 GLAM! fashion show is “Doll Me Up.”
This year aspiring local designers, including students from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Maui College, Honolulu Community College and Kaimuki’s ME+U Sewing, are being invited to audition to be apart of Zamora’s GLAM! team. Under Zamora’s guidance, the chosen designers will be responsible for “dolling-up” the models for the runway with their own original looks upcycled from Goodwill merchandise. Following the show, Zamora will give out $1,500 in scholarships sponsored by Goodwill Hawaii to the designer(s) he feels has the most industry potential in the years to come.
“Kini is such a talented artist and an amazing role model, so to be able to bring fashion and education together at Goodwill Goes GLAM! presented by Bank of Hawaii Foundation aligns with our mission to help people become self-sufficient and reach their full potential,” said Laura Smith, president and CEO for Goodwill Hawaii. “We are so grateful to Kini for donating his time and talents to support Goodwill Hawaii for the second year in a row.”
Goodwill Hawaii’s mission is to assist people who are having difficulty finding employment, offering them the services and tools they need to become self-sufficient and realize their potential. Last year, Goodwill assisted more than 11,000 individuals with job training, counseling and placement programs statewide. With a daily influx of donations statewide, Goodwill is also a great source for all the latest fashions and trends at an affordable price.
“Having had the honor to work on Goodwill Goes GLAM! last year, I have a deeper appreciation for Goodwill and all the good they do for the community,” said Zamora. “It’s always exciting to shop at Goodwill and find those ‘diamonds in the rough,’ and I’m looking forward to bringing those diamonds to the runway for another great GLAM! fashion show.”
The GLAM! fashion show is one of the highlights of the Goodwill Goes GLAM! presented by Bank of Hawaii Foundation exclusive Gala on Thursday, July 21, which is followed by three days of GLAM! Retail Sales from July 22-24. GLAM! Retail Sales will feature a vast marketplace of chic and vintage items collected from Goodwill Hawaii stores. Over $280,000 was raised at last year’s event for Goodwill’s job placement and job training programs.
Tickets for the Goodwill Goes GLAM! fashion show on July 21 and the retail sale days from July 22-24 will go on sale in June.
Call for designers
Auditions to design for the Goodwill Goes GLAM! fashion show will be held in person with Zamora at his Aiea boutique, The Clique by KZ (99-1132 Iwaena St.), on March 24 and 25 from 9a.m.–5p.m. by appointment only. Walk-in appointments will be held on April 2 from 9a.m.–5p.m. Interested participants must be at least 16 years of age, able to provide a portfolio of work and sketches, a garment designed and sewn by the applicant, and two references.
