Honolulu, Hawaii – Goodwill Hawaii has received a two-year $720,000 grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) that will help expand its successful Career Pathways program to serve communities statewide. In partnership with the University of Hawaii Community Colleges, Goodwill Hawaii will help eligible Hawaiians to improve their ability to obtain higher-wage employment, leading to further economic independence.
Goodwill Hawaii’s mission is to help people with employment barriers to reach their full potential and become self-sufficient. The nonprofit organization currently serves more than 11,000 people each year, of whom one in four (27%) are Native Hawaiian, through its job training and employment services programs statewide.
“Goodwill Hawaii is honored that the Office of Hawaiian Affairs recognizes the strength and ability of our organization to make a difference in the Native Hawaiian community,” said Emily Lau, Goodwill Hawaii’s Vice President of Mission Services. “This funding will help us to empower more Native Hawaiian families to be financially stable and self-sufficient.”
Native Hawaiians whose household incomes are 300% or below the federal poverty level can access Goodwill’s services for FREE. Participants will receive comprehensive intake and assessment, pre-employment training, financial literacy education, case management, and tuition subsidies to help them attain the degrees and technical skills required for higher-paying jobs. Additionally, once a participant is placed into gainful employment, a minimum of three months job retention counseling is provided.
Career Pathways has helped more than 150 people find jobs since it was launched on Hawaii Island in 2013 and is expected to serve 216 more over the next two years. For more information, visit goodwillhawaii.org or call (808) 836-0313.
